Vertical blending of spirits of different ages is now a routine procedure the world over, for the humblest to the finest of spirits. This one is a diamond. It's the fruit of one of those encounters that leaves a mark…. An experienced old Officer facing his final battle, Tomintoul 67, and a young soldier contemplating his first, find themselves side by side one night in the trenches… The nerve-racking wait compels them to strike up a conversation, to open up… the boy-soldier's eyes are wide as he hangs onto the words of the officer who, with a stern and paternal naturalness, tells tales of endless battles, all the while primed for the slightest movement from the enemy. This raw and enterprising youngster and the old Tomintoul, mingling together against an olfactory time span of 50 years, rapidly picks up pace and beats like the heart of a man besotted at the sight of his true love. The dimension and depth brought by the new recruit make all the aromas clearly defined. Pear, honey and then that smell of wet sugar that gives substance and balance at the same time. A complex nose… mint, rosemary and herbs are joined by hints of chocolate, fresh leather and tobacco. On the palate, bold unique tones that are unusual for a Speyside… fresh tobacco just set aside to dry makes you instantly forget what the nose had led you to expect: let's be clear, they are still elegant, pleasant and intriguing…. A serious elegance, like that flaunted in self portraits from the Hapsburg era, not lavish or Latin, like that often found in 20 or 30-year-old Speysides.
Like a rough diamond, it has been worked… and like a precious stone, it must be jealously guarded…
…SAVOUR IT, DROP AT A TIME!…
